Rare goblin shark caught at mouth of Tokyo Bay

A goblin shark (Mitsukurina owstoni), considered a living fossil by scientists, was caught by a trawler off the coast of Miura, Japan. The 1.3-meter, 4-kg fish is a rare bottom-dwelling species of shark. Catching the shark in the relatively shallow waters around the mouth of Tokyo Bay is considered highly unusual.

Goblin shark

One defining characteristic of the goblin shark is its elongated snout. The goblin shark’s teeth closely resemble those of a known fossil species of shark, earning it the nickname of “living fossil.”

Katsumi Suzuki, 42, a fisherman working at Kami-Miyata Port in Miura City, says he caught the shark while net-fishing for monkfish in 350-meter deep water. Yokohama City Aquarium and Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise Aqua Museum official Takayuki Shishikura, 42, says, “This shark demonstrates the abundance of sea life in the waters around Tokyo Bay.”

Whoa, I hope he released it….i mean it is a living fossil what they called it. ‘Abundance of sea life around tokyo bay’ don’t mean anything once its all dies, sounds like if they are that special then dont allow fishermans to show it off dead.

I never see anything about the goblin shark on anyshows or anything.

  20. Studying Ichtheology (emphasis in sharks)

The only other species it could be is a birdbeak dogfish. the picture on this website should show you the similarities in the species. they both have pointed “snouts” and have been seen in many colours, yes including pink. I do believe it to be a Goblin shark though.

P.S. He is right they are pinkish whitish coler when alive then turns dull gray before turning brown and rotting.

Goblin sharks are deep sea sharks and are actually really ugly when they are adults.

  28. Yes, they are very ugly, which is probably where the name “Goblin” came from. Still, it’s amazing to see a creature that is virtually the same as creatures that lived here far before humans did.
