Suburban Tokyo nightscapes

In Tomoyuki Sakaguchi’s night photos of suburban Tokyo, familiar landscapes of densely arranged middle-class prefab homes, tightly parked cars, small gardens and anonymous street corners are somehow rendered strangely unfamiliar under the artificial glow of street lights. Check Sakaguchi’s website (or his book) for a huge collection of high-res images.

  1. I love the pictures. The lighting is amazing. I like the yellow house in the first pic and I actually like the way the simple, small prefab homes look like.

  2. Amazings Pics, is really strange the lights used.

  3. […] These long exposure shots taken around Tokyo suburbs at night look so surreal and even fake, they feel like a stop motion set. […]

  4. Wow that last picture looks unreal, amazing pictures.

  5. Nice shoots, you can see similar views in Kyoto…

Very interesting idea. One could create pictures like this with photoshop so it’s especially admirable that he or she (whichever the photographer might be) has taken time to create these effects with exposure and other controls.

  8. Interesting how it makes the places look like a tiny model village too, like photos by eg Lori Nix
