Robot teddy bear car navigation system
On June 3, engineers at iXs Research Corporation unveiled a robotic teddy bear designed to work as a talking car navigation system. The prototype robot stands 30 centimeters (1 ft) tall and has 6 joints in its arms and neck, which it uses to make gestures while providing spoken directions.
The robot bear is also equipped with functions to improve auto safety, such as an alcohol detection sensor embedded in its neck. If it smells booze, the robot confronts the driver, saying, “You haven’t been drinking, have you?” Other sensors detect reckless driving, so if the driver suddenly accelerates or slams on the brakes, the robot says, “Watch out!”
As a bonus feature, the robot bear provides information about nearby landmarks when you stroke its head.
The company hopes to make the robot commercially available next year. “We want to make it more compact,” says CEO Fuminori Yamasaki, “and we’d like to offer a variety of shapes, including other characters and a plain mechanical version.”
Fujitsu has patented the idea of merging car navigation systems with dolls, but it has granted iXs Research Corporation permission to use the patent through a Kawasaki-area project encouraging major corporations to share intellectual property rights with small-to-medium-sized companies.

Non vi manca il breve contatto umano implicito nel gesto di chiedere indicazioni stradali ad un passante? I più sensibili di noi, infastiditi dal suono robotico del proprio navigatore satellitare, hanno sostituito la voce registrata standard con indicazioni pronunciate con un tono più divertente, magari con imitazioni di personaggi famosi o con registrazioni in dialetto. Ma alcuni ricercatori stanno lavorando ad un modo decisamente più complesso e creatvo di personalizzare il GPS: che ne direste se a fornirvi le indicazioni stradali fosse un orsetto di peluche, in grado addirittura di gesticolare e di puntare nella direzione giusta? L’orsacchiotto, che ci fa pensare a Teddy, l’orsetto mecha di A.I. - Intelligenza Artificiale, è per il momento ancora un prototipo, ma sappiamo già che sarà alto all’incirca 30 cm ed avrà zampe e collo articolati. Ma non è tutto: questo strano peluche è anche dotato di una serie di strumentazioni in grado di vigilare sulla sicurezza del giudatore, tra cui un sensore in grado di rilevare l’alcol nel respiro di chi è al volante; nel qual caso l’orsacchiotto si preoccuperà di sottolineare il pericolo. Un altro sensore sarà poi in grado di rilevare improvvisi cambiamenti nel ritmo di guida, così che il peluche possa gridare “Fai attenzione!” se la vettura sta sbandando o sta andando fuori strada. Un altra peculiarità di questo orsacchiotto è che se lo si accarezza sulla testa può fornire nozioni interessanti e curiosità sul paesaggio circonstante. Sviluppato dalla giapponese IXs Research Corporation, il peluche dovrebbe arrivare sul mercato l’anno prossmo, e probabilmente oltre all’orsacchiotto sarà disponibile un’ampia gamma di personaggi differenti.
